Ping uses some of the most advanced chipsets and algorithms available in the consumer market for its GPS and cellular triangulation systems.
All GPS is accurate between 3 to 10 meters under best case scenarios. Factors affecting the quality of this reading include weather, obstructions (deep indoors, underground), satellite positioning, and others. Ping tries to compensate for some of these obstacles by augmenting our readings with additional location data.
In the event that GPS is not available, Ping uses cellular triangulation combined with a deep database of location reports, to narrow down the location and provide an approximation. This COULD be up to 200 feet from a center, which is not ideal but better than no information at all. If this is the case, our mobile app will report the approximation and give the user the ability to retry their location request.
